Full-Power vs Lightweight eMTB: Which Should You Buy?

Guide

Full-Power vs Lightweight eMTB

Two very different bikes. Here is how to tell which one suits your riding.

Electric mountain bikes split into two broad camps: full-power and lightweight. Neither is better, they are built for different riders.

Full-power eMTBs

Full-power bikes use larger motors and bigger batteries for maximum torque and range. They climb anything, cover huge distances, and let you fit more laps into a day. The trade-off is weight, which you notice most when the motor is off or when you throw the bike around.

Lightweight eMTBs

Lightweight bikes use smaller motors and batteries to save weight, so they feel closer to a regular mountain bike, more playful and agile. The trade-off is less outright power and range, so big all-day missions ask more of you.

Which is right for you?

  • Choose full-power if you want maximum climbing, long range, and as many descents per day as possible.
  • Choose lightweight if you value a natural, agile feel and do shorter or less steep rides.
