eMTB marketing loves big numbers. Watts, torque, peak this and boost that. Here is what they actually mean, and why the way a motor delivers its power matters far more than any single figure.
Power, in plain terms
Power is how much work the motor can do, and it shapes how strongly the bike surges when you ask for help. In Canada, road-legal e-bikes are limited to a 500 watt motor with assistance up to 32 km/h, so the meaningful differences between good bikes are about delivery, not raw ceiling.
Torque, in plain terms
Torque is turning force. It is what you feel as shove on a steep climb from low speed. More torque generally means easier climbing and stronger pull off the mark. Full-power eMTB motors sit near the top of what is available, and the strong systems all deliver plenty for real trail climbing.
Why delivery beats the number
Here is the part the spec sheet hides. Two motors with similar figures can feel completely different.
