British Columbia has some of the clearest e-bike rules in Canada. Here is what riders need to know in 2026.
Two classes of e-bike in BC
BC calls e-bikes motor assisted cycles and recognises two classes:

Rules for every rider
- Helmet: an approved helmet is mandatory, every rider, every age.
- No licence, insurance or registration for a compliant e-bike.
- Working pedals and a motor that cuts off assistance when you brake.
Riding an eMTB in BCOn roads and bike lanes, a compliant e-bike is treated as a bicycle. On trails, access is set by the land manager. Many BC networks and bike parks welcome pedal-assist eMTBs, but rules differ, so check the specific trail or park (Whistler, Squamish or a local network) before you ride.
